I Knew I Would Love It!
I knew I would love this hand mixer although I have a stand mixer. There are days when it seems I'm using more than one appliance for several dishes. Often when baking, I also need to make frosting, or whipped cream, or beat egg whites separately. I'd rather have an additional bowl to wash, than to juggle everything in the one bowl of my stand mixer. The cord is long enough to use it where I can't easily use my stand mixer. I love the retractable cord. I am glad it doesn't retract all at once, because that could be painful to be hit by the cord, or knock something off my work space. I'm always watching out for cords knocking over liquids or sharp knives. The beaters insert easily and eject just as easily. I wash them by hand because I don't have a dishwasher and I prefer to wash all the parts of my appliances by hand. I dry the beaters by hand as well. I haven't used the whisk because the beaters worked fine for eggs and whipped cream. The base also is easy to clean. The mixer has enough power for everything I've made so far. Some reviewers felt it was too powerful, but I haven't found the power overwhelming. With any mixer, care is taken so you don't end up wearing the flour or eggs. A powerful mixer makes it possible to mix more quickly, saving time for other things. Whipped cream, clafoutis, eggs, egg whites, waffle batter, were all simple to make because the mixer is intuitive to use. I sometimes neglect my stand mixer to give this hand mixer a thorough workout during the 30 day return period. Although I was convinced long ago that one mixer wasn't enough, I'm still surprised how much I rely on mixing in one day. I can get my recipes done and in and out of the oven more efficiently. There are less expensive hand mixers I could have bought, since this isn't my only mixer. But the Oster name, and retractable cord won my purchase. The mixer looks good on the counter with my other Oster appliances. I use it too often to put it away in the cabinet. One concern I had about this purchase is the weight, but that hasn't been an issue so far.I don't regret this purchase at all and wish I hadn't waited. I planned to buy an immersion blender/stick mixer but never could make up my mind which to buy. A hand mixer is more practical for me as it is more useful if my stand mixer stops working. This mixer seems durable enough I should be using it for years.

Nice hand mixer
This one will replace a Sunbeam hand mixer I got in 1980 though it is still working fine. The cord entry area is beginning to fray, darn it! This Oster is bigger overall, more the size of a standard mixer head, but not nearly as heavy. I had no problem using it to make my mashed potatoes this evening. The slow start speed is perfect and the max speed is more than I will likely ever need. The burst of speed is convenient & the beaters eject nicely. The casing is shiny black plastic so I expect it will show scratches over time. Beaters with the center post are stronger than other brands without it. The whisk looks rather weak so don't expect to do more than whip cream or eggs. The cord retractor is acceptable but requires holding the cord straight to assist it. Overall, I am satisfied though a smaller size would be ideal. I would not expect this to manage bread dough or a heavy cookie dough, which is really more the purpose of a standard size mixer. Cake mix or pancake batter and other light work will make it last longer I believe. If I have any issues, I will update my review. It does have a 1 year warranty which is rather surprising these days!Jan 22, 2015- finally started usung this one, as my Sunbeam died, actually only the cord died but it could not be replaced so I ditched it. This mixer is performing very well with mashed potatoes, peanut. butter cookie recipe and other smaller jobs. It does not throw flour all over as some had concerns about. Beaters come out with a. little tug. I wash them immediately to avoid risk of rust.My only complaint is with the cord retractor which barely works, so I wrap it around the handle to store it.

Good Value with retractable cord feature
I've seen reviews of similarly priced and powered hand mixers out there. What I like about this mixer are the REAL old school hand mixer beaters--these are not like the flimsy wire beaters even some of the top brands supply with theirs. I did not need the egg beater attachment, but it, too, is substantial. I also bought this for the retractable cord because I detest wrapping cords around appliances to store. I had looked at the hand mixers that came with their own storage bin underneath, but did not want to pay $20 more just for that; moreover, the overall size of the appliance at that point would make cabinet storage more difficult. While some have stated that the cord does not retract well, I found that it is typical of a small appliance. Hold the appliance and the cord and push the button while guiding it in. Not a big deal. I was hoping for a really LOW low speed, like many other reviewers. I will put this to the test in a week and will report back if any problems, but in the meantime I ran through the speeds and found them to each operate well. What one needs to keep in mind is that the motor on this, and other hand mixers, is not as sophisticated as a stand mixer. The very good stand mixers have a slow speed that barely moves! And that's a good thing when you are dealing with confectioners sugar! Anyone who buys a hand mixer should understand you are not going to get a super slow speed on these. Also, many complain when their hand mixer burns out after a number of cookie or bread batches. No one should expect to make cookie batter frequently and not burn this thing out in short order. Sure, you can cream your sugars and butter together with a hand mixer---but don't put the flour in there and expect miracles. Cookie batters require hand mixing or much more powerful, stand mixers! What this thing will probably rock at will be cake batters, egg whites into meringue, tinting already prepared frosting, etc, where speed is needed and the mixture is light! At the end of the day, if you really want it for cookies and breads and pie crusts....and a stand mixer is outside the budget, then buy this or other hand mixers and be prepared to replace sooner than you would have liked to.Finally, the weight of the mixer is what I would expect. It is not a light weight, but substantial. And I won't be standing there for 10 minutes trying to get this thing to mix cookie batter, at any rate. One "con" is that when stood on its back end it doesn't quite stand flat. A bit wobbly, but still solidly there. I'd say the price point was also a determining factor for me.Update two months in use...No complaints! Working well and I am very satisfied with speeds and power. Weight is no issue and I am no spring chicken. The power burst button, which provides the highest speed for as long as you press it is very handy; little bursts of speed help get those messy mixes going without bobbling with the speed control! I have used it to supplememt and instead of my big Kitchen Aid stand mixer many times, it's just that nice and convenient.
