ZOOM R8 multi-track recorder (Japan Import)

It arrived two days early. Yes the instructions are in Japanese but are readily available online. This was well worth the wait for the cheaper price. Very good job. Domo Arigato. I would order from these guys again. The unit works perfectly as it should. Zoom R8. Thanks again.

Vendor sent japanese manual! 140 pages of useless junk. Box was printed in English, inserts about SD card were English, unit front panel is English. Unit is useless without manual. Asked them to provide, was rudely told no! Contacted Zoom American distributor, was told to contact jaspanese. Website sasys to contact US distributor. Unit appears to be pretty cool, but company is terrible, from sea to sea!

There were a few things I was wondering about, and now that I received the unit, I can confirm.1. The unit labels are English. The unit's display text and all the content inside are all in English. But the manual is Japanese. The package box itself is in English as well.2. The unit comes with a power supply and cable. Works for US/CAN outlets. 5V - 1.0A output. Input is 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz. It's essentially a usb wall charger. The unit powers through USB OR 4x AA batteries.3. When powering through batteries, you can change the settings to be Alkaline or NiMH, so yes rechargeables are okay to use in this unit.4. The package does not include an SD card5. The package includes a Sheet for Cubase LE with a Download Access Code.6. The unit was brand new and never used.Is software required? No not really, the unit can record as a stand alone recorder. Yes if you plan to use it on a computer. There are quite a number of DAWs available online or you can install Cubase LE which is included as a sheet in the bag that holds the Japanese Manual. The Cubase LE download Info sheet is in English and a few other languages.Is an SD card required? Not if you plan to use it on a computer as a controller, but you would need a DAW. Yes if you plan to use it as a standalone recorder.Can I get the EN manual online? Yes, the zoom site provides it.Does it come with a warrantee? No. The warrantee that comes with it are only for Japanese Customers.Final thoughts:If you don't need an SD Card or a DAW because you already have those, then this unit would work great for you. There is quite a substantial amount of savings by going with this international/japan version vs the US version.Shipping wise, it was ordered, shipped and delivered within 2 days. Although my expectation as noted when I ordered it was 6 weeks. It was a very pleasant surprise to have arrived within 2 days.I will update this review once I've gotten more time to familiarize myself with this.A side note of why I purchased this. Aside from being incredibly versatile, my sole reason for this purchase was because it was the cheapest audio interface capable of hooking up to a stereo mic. But honestly, it is much much more than what I purchased it for and I do plan to use all the features in this to its fullest. It's essentially a portable studio. You can record PC-less, assuming you have all the proper gear such as Mics and Headphones/Speakers.

I received a Zoom R8 shortly before Xmas. I have had problems activating the software and I was told that it is not possible to receive a pre-activated software package. I finally purchased a new windows 10 laptop and hoping that the software downloading-activation problem will be resolved. I haven't had the chance to give this recorder a try yet and hoping that the end result will be worth all the software activation and system adaptation headaches...If a purchaser is not fully familiar with the program downloading-activation-file transfer and not technically up to date, this recorder can be challenge and it may be required to find some friends to help out. My rating is 3 stars. Once I get fully familiar with this unit and software activities, the top rating might apply down the road. The purchase price was a very good deal and I'm willing to put all the extra effort to get this recorder operational as soon as possible.Jacques Desjardins.
