Fine grind and tamped. I am finding that it has a alight bitter taste to it no mater what I do but with all fairness I have not used a high quality coffee yet. I think that it is a very easy way to make espresso and be able to take it any where I want. I like it and feel it is well worth the money. Cleaning is a bit harder, I run hot water through it several time to get all the coffee out of the upper part and then dry it good. I preheat by running the hot water through it first with the filter attached, then I do the shot. I am looking forward to finding the right coffee, preferring to find a good organic coffee. I give it 4 stars not a 5 only because the frothier that comes with this is totally useless.
