So happy to see that a topic long needed for public policy and social organization has come to the forefront of scholarly consideration. As a fluid concept, identifying what behavior, both individual, corporate, and group, qualifies as acceptable and unacceptable in modern society is crucial to policing, making, and enforcement of laws that reinforce conformity, or identifiable as "deviant." An approach designed to identify acceptable vs deviant has yet to be formed that can be used as a benchmark for human behavior in any society (except by religious tradition, and those are so hard to change). The field is wide open to classify the many attitudes and consequential behaviors that fall within acceptable to most boundaries, and unacceptable boundaries that influence society worldwide that it is surprising there has not yet been built an Institute to study deviance and its ramifications on society. Whether the subdivisions of sexuality, gender & marital relations, gangs, corporate strategy, or religious practices, policing, youthful daring and curiosity, or politics and congressional prerogative, all may be viewed with the context of degrees of deviance from norms which may be identifiable as risky, or not that has significant influence on our lives. Social, Economic, political, ecological, criminal deviance are all topics critical to our norm-driven society, the presumptions that organize human behavior in the setting of limits, laws, protections, etc. an infinitely important topic that needs sophisticated research!
