FIXED ODDS SPORTS BETTING : The Essential Guide: Statistical Forecasting and Risk Management

Essential reading
I started gambling years ago but only started betting to win money after reading this. It's helped me ditch ideas of certainty and 'locks' and really understand value in not just a single bet, but in the search for finding value over many bets - the sign of true skill. It teaches you the perils of poor money management, fundamentals of bookmaking probabilities (from both sides) and how you can begin to think for yourself and begin formalizing your own models. Most bettors should be able to use Excel (or code) and there are great examples of how to set up distributions to see what you are actually working with.Unlike other reviewers I was not at all put off by the math and using abstract numbers really allows one to dispel their own prejudices of whether a bet is a proposition worth losing money or not. It's miles better than a lot of the American style books that focus on NFL/MLB ilnes and gives you tools to apply forecasting to any sport and any odds.Mr. Buchdahls next book does an even better job of getting into the psychology of betting and I am eager to read his latest which i'm told help even more. To that end I would also recommend 'The Intelligent Investor', 'Trading in the Zone' and 'Thinking: fast and slow'.This book is for anyone who wants to learn if they can go toe to toe with the other bookies and punters out there and find out if they have what it takes or not. There is no shame in realizing you can't win money from betting, only that you can't face the numbers.

Very technical
Covers teh subject of risk management and bet placing perfectly, tons of information, graphs information.More of a 'This is what will happen if yo do this' type of book than one that tells you just how to pick a horse, so heavily maths based.

A solid offering for the aspiring sportsbettor
A decent introduction to the concept of value betting. The focus is very much on staking strategies and little attention is given to rating systems. There is no discussion of weighing subjective evidence such as motivation or fatigue. Good use of simulation highlights the need to set stake size correctly in order to balance the desire for bankroll growth with the need to avoid bankruptcy. There is some decent material on overrounds in different markets and the it is the only book I've read that talks about finding 'arithmetic value' - comparing the odds against the market average. This is a useful book for the bettor who wants to take the game more seriously . I would like to give it four stars but it is not well-rounded enough for a general beginners guide and lacking in the modelling insights that could be useful to more experienced players. The author also has a tendency to write a paragraph when a sentence would have sufficed.

Must have
El libro explica el proceso completo centrándose en la gestión del bankroll. Se hecha en falta algún sistema de calculo de probabilidades pero indica algún ejemplo lo que puede suponer la base para sistemas propios.

Download was not Kindle format
Joseph Buchdahl is an excellent author and I've previously purchased two of his books. But for some reason this book, once downloaded, appeared not to be in Kindle format but looked like a pdf documents and its orientation was off.Evidently some kind of technical problem.

a bit over rated
i bought this book on the strength of the other reviews, however in my opinion , it is very overatted, the book starts off simply enough with some gambling and investement information, if your an experienced gambler though you will have heard all of this before though. The book then gets very heavy, with uninteresting reading , graphs and equations all of which are not much of real use. It might be because i have done a level statistical maths before, but to be honest i cant see this book helping anyone with there fixed odds sports betting

Great for analysing your systems
This book is not going to tell you how to come up with a system to be profitable. Its not even going to give you many insights into how to handicap sports but it gives you the tools to know whether or not your current handicapping/system has an edge and whether it will continue. The book focuses on a lot of stastitcal analysis of your betting record as well as the best options for staking.Well worth the read for those who are not knew to the game. Sophisticated punters will get something out of this but those new to the game will probably be a bit bamboozled and not appreciate the information provided.Good Luck
