incredible book
It's so surprising to me that this book isn't as popular as it should be in America. It has every element that I think a lot of people want in a novel. It's incredibly smart in both dialog and story line, and it's interesting in a scientific way, as well as in an artful, darkly surreal way. His thought processes as he writes are acute and effective yet beautifully detached and creative. He goes through people's inner dialogs in an incredibly psychiatric way--like he wants to subtly point out everybody's neurosis, thereby creating a theme. It certainly set up a certain aura. However, it turns out the translation is pretty weak, but I forget about that as I read it because the story is so unique and engaging.I can only hope that the anime can attract people's attention to the book. While the anime is beautiful and perfect for Satoshi Kon's visual style, the book is a totally individual experience

Great Book- Slow but enjoyable!
I loved it! There are not many slow parts of the book but when it DOES slow down, you DEFINITELY feel it. Once you push through, the books picks up and stays up throughout. The descriptions of the characters and the world they inhabit are amazing!

Wasn't as wow'd as others were
I got this book because I've read every Haruki Murakami novel and when I ran out I craved more of his stories. I looked up other books similar to his and this one kept popping up. I read it. It was ok. Definitely no Murakami, and could be a little slow at times, but it was fine. I think 3 stars is a fair rating for it imho. Not a knock out, but not terrible.

an intriguing tale
Some of the translation is off. Still an intriguing tale that was worth the effort to explore. Different from the movie, but that's not unexpected. I would recommend this as a good read.

Excellent book, strong recommendation.
I couldn't put the book down after I began reading it. The book deals with many themes including Jungian psychology, but also the conflicting issues within the psychiatric institute and sexuality. There are very potent dialogues including between opposing sides within the hospital, police officers that learn of malign occurrences in the psychiatric hospital and their sympathy toward the researcher, Atsuka Chiba. The characters have great depth and other issues of modern life are discussed including the media and its role in society, ethical concerns in science and the pursuit of fame. It's an excellent book that covers many areas of modern life in a very imaginative manner.

An interesting read.
I really enjoyed this book. After seeing the movie based on it I had to read it. However it is like most books adapted to film, different. It goes more in depth thus making the film easier to follow and understand. This might not be for every reader but if you really loved the movie give this a read you will be thankful.

Twisty, Delightful, Insane, Dreamy
I first saw the anime, Paprika. It got me intrigued. This novel has some translation issues, but it is a great read. Very well written with beautifully complex characters and motivations. I highly recommend this novel. The ending is also deliciously fitting of the novel.

Just awful misogyny wrapped in sci-fi clothing...
Just awful misogyny wrapped in sci-fi clothing... What else to say? The dream-entering concept is interesting, and the first quarter of the book did a good job of world-building around the characters and technology. The misogyny, chauvinism, and [literally] violent sexism builds through the book to an intolerable level. The author writes like 1950s gender politics are the norm, and mixes it with adolescent anime-porn fantasies. It almost felt embarrassing to finish reading.Pass.

If you love Murakami A. your mind will be blown by this!
Not magic, neither completely real. This story takes great characters in a reality where nothing can be defined too strictly, no actions has exactly the effects they expect, but still they need to decode its rules to fight for their freedom, sometimes choosing between morality and safety.

I liked the book. It is worth to read.
No more to say. This is something, I've never read before. Very bizarre dream scapes and an emotional rollercoaster throughout the book.

Inception literario

Great story
I loved the story of this book. Tsutsui creates strange and sometimes unsettling ambiances, but without losing the reader's attention and interest.

I unable to put this book down (read it on the train, while walking...)
What a fantastic, gripping book. The book is set in an institute where mental patients are treated using electronical devices that make it possible to access the patients' dreams. When one of the Directors of the institue - a naive, geeky man - invents a new psycho therapeutic device, that is tiny, mobile and allows access of dreams without entering a security code, etc. five of the six prototypes fall into the hands of staff who amongst other things are against the use of PT devices and who have made horrific plans for the part of the staff who have been developing and using these devices - a confrontation, that starts to involve more and more people soon starts to develop. It becomes more and more difficult for everyone that is involved in this war (as well as the reader) to distinguish between dream and reality. The main character is a 'dream detective' who has used the PT technology for many years and who as such uses the pseudonym Paprika.I recommend this book to -not only - everyone who can remember what they dream. This book definitely got under my skin, like I said it was impossible for me to put it down - while I was at work, I kept looking forward to my way beack home when I was able to continue to read this excellent book again.
