A great read for Harry Potter fans, with or without prior interest in sociology
I am a huge Harry Potter fan and a sociology instructor, so naturally was enthusiastic to read this book as soon as it came out, and I'm glad I did. This collection of essays provides Harry Potter readers with a sociological perspective on the HP saga. Each essay looks at a different sphere of social relations in the HP imaginary world--parenting and childhood, dating and romantic relationships, health and maladies, sports, international relations, race, and more--through the lens of existing sociological theories. I've learned that when put under sociological analysis, many of the HP themes are more realistic than imaginary; apparently, the world Harry Potter is not so very different from ours...Each essay provides enough background information, so that readers with little familiarity with the Harry Potter books will still be able to follow the main argument. In short, this book does exactly what it sets out to do, and does it well.

A gem of a book!
A fantastic book on the sociology of how the world of Harry Potter works! This book was inspiring and as a Harry Potter fan, I have decided to write my own essays on how I think Jk's world runs! My only regret is that Red-hen, a Potterverse essay writer with her own website (google it - it will be the first result!) was not included somewhere in the book. Her Werewolf Caper essay would have been a brilliant part of the book if included!Jenn Sims has done herself proud! The sociology concepts and theories are easily explained and just as quickly understood. When they are applied to the world of Harry Potter, it doesn't take you long to realise why - each concept with each HP issue go hand-in-hand. They bring up some theories that had never even occurred to me before and were nice to read about. A joy to read such an up-to-date, thought-provoking encyclopaedia of Harry Potter essay's. We just need a post-Pottermore edition to make it even better. I would strongly recommend this book!

léger
Ce livre écrit par des fans est trop souvent biaisé par leurs propres idéologies, et les articles sont beaucoup trop courts pour être approfondis. Il y en a même un qui traite de psychologie de personnage.
