SureFireDSF-870 Ultra-High Two-Output-Mode LED WeaponLight for Remington 870 , Black

I purchased this light for my personal 870P. The "day job" shotguns have a variety of older Surefire lights (618LMGs et al) and my only criticism of the older versions is the "bulk" of the gripping area. The DSF-870 has a somewhat slimmer profile and is, I think, a more solidly-built improvement over those versions. I will likely replace the older lights on agency shotguns with these as the older ones go out-of-service (which means, generally speaking, "not for a while," since even the old ones are built like tanks.) Unlike earlier iterations, this model is ambidextrous and both left- or right-handed shooters have used mine with no issues.The slimmer overall profile keeps your support hand closer to the bore axis than earlier models (or competitor's models like the Eotech forends) which you'll appreciate if you're transitioning to this from a "naked" 870 forend. It results in the shotgun pointing more naturally than with some of the bulkier options.High-output is great if you're contemplating using it outdoors. Indoors, the "bounce back" from white walls be problematic (imagine 600 lumens reflected back at you, in a dark room, at a time when you most need your night vision intact.) Try both modes, but know that the low mode is probably more than enough for indoor or home-defense use.Installation will require a forend wrench. Surefire includes a small one with the product. Alignment matters; if you install it yourself, make sure when you crank down on the locking ring that the forend is straight, otherwise, you might experience some binding when you cycle the action. The battery-drain issue noted in the early units appears to have been corrected.This is just a good, all-around, effective piece of equipment. I'm trying to find something to be critical of, but really can't.

So I was terrified of the whole battery drain issue. Who wants a light for defense that might be off if you leave the rocker switch on. It's on the bottom so it'll take maybe a second to activate but that second could mean all the difference in a home invasion. Did a lot digging into the internet and it seems that sure fire have addressed the problem. There is a new version of the light that has a very minimal drain as in a few years to cause issues with the battery which I can accept. You can tell if you have the new version by 2 methods. 1 - there is a serial number along the rim of the lens cover and 2 - you have the ability to change what the sets of button do i.e. change where the front/back buttons do constant or momentary on by holding the intensity selector (small button on the back on the left) with the rocker in the on position for 10 secs. I overall like the product's felt durable, have had it in the rocker on mode for about 2 weeks without battry drain. Only thing I would add would be a strobe mode.And if you brought and older version with the drain issue contact sure fire asap they should let you send it in for an upgrade to the new circuits.

Let me begin by saying that if your job involves black helicopters and the shotgun is your primary weapon, Do. Not. Get. This. Buy a Surefire Scout and mount that to your shotgun. And here's why. First of all, the DSF weighs a lot. It adds about 33% more weight to the gun. Second, the thumb grooves are nice, but when you put your thumb there the recoil slams the light back into your offhand trigger finger. It gets annoying after about 5 rounds. Of course, one guy told me I have a weak grip, so I might be biased. But if you get this, I would also get a pair of Mechanix Mpact gloves. Now, if your daily life does not involve dodging incoming bullets and you're looking for a light for your shotgun that you use to defend your family, I would highly recommend this as long as your shotgun has iron sights. I know some guys use their flashlight to aim their shotgun (my old roommate did) but you can't do that with that with the DSF. It throws a wide, bright beam that lights up the entire room. You won't have to worry about missing the bad guy in the corner, but you will have to use your sights if you want to put rounds on target. The heavy weight is a small price to pay for a 600 lumen wide beam. Also, the recoil issue won't be a big deal as I'm guessing that in a home invasion you won't need more than 3 rounds of 3in magnum 00 buck to end the situation. Also, some guys have been complaining that the master switch drains the battery, mine's been on for several months and the light hasn't dimmed at all.

This completes the tactical shotgun. It has a mean look and the light is blinding. It alone might fend off an intruder. It is an expensive accessory. I feel it is worth the money. Very well made. One thing to note is that the shotgun must be partially disassembled to install it. If you don't feel comfortable with that have a gunsmith install it. I would also reccomend not over tightening the cylinder that holds it on the slide rails. If you do it will case the slide to bind.

I have several SureFire weapon lights for my shotguns, AR-15's. They're all high quality. Not cheap, but excellent value.The DSF is the 2nd generation of shotgun light that I've used. The older ones were good - these are outstanding. A bit lighter, just as well made. Easy to install, and they brighten up the night like you're standing in the noon day sun. 600 lumens is pretty bright.

but I had to whittle the inside of the piece a little to keep it from sticking in the retract position.

If you're on the fence about this I would not hesitate to purchase this. I researched many different ways of mounting a light and this one was perfect for my set up. Its controls are very intuitive and its incredibly bright.However the one bad thing I discovered was there is a split along the "seam" near the controls. It doesn't hurt its function but I don't know how it will hold up over time if it ever gets wet.
