Born of Night: A League Novel

Born of the Night
Nykyrian Quiakides was one of The League's top assassins, but he became a hunted man himself when he refused to carry out an assignment. Years later, Nykyrian is surprisingly still alive and now leader of The Sentella, a group of secretive and elite individuals who save the innocent and kill the villains. Nykyrian and his men rescue Kiara Zamir, a powerful senator's daughter, from brutal kidnappers. Saving Kiara should have been just another mission for Nykyrian, but it changed his life forever. Nykyrian accepted long ago that he would always be alone and feared by those around him, so when Kiara is not repulsed by him, he's stunned. He's an assassin, she's a princess. Nykyrian knows he can't have her, but that doesn't stop him from wanting her.Nykyrian's emotional scars run even deeper than his multitude of physical ones. The suffering and abuse he endured is unimaginable. Nykyrian's longing for love, companionship, and acceptance is strong, but his self preservation instincts are stronger. It creates some serious inner turmoil for him. While Kiara's life was pampered and sheltered, she is just as emotionally needy as Nykyrian. They find the comradery and passion their lives were previously lacking with each other. The sexual and emotional experiences they share are firsts for both of them, making moments that much more touching. Born of Night takes place in a universe where humans co-exist with other beings in an, at best, semi-peaceful existence. Born of Night is full of excitement, action, and sensuality. It has twists and turns and many intriguing characters. I would love to read Darling's story and I look forward to Syn's. In a literary world full of tortured heroes, there are few who compare to Nykyrian Quiakides. Ironically, Kenyon has another character that I place in this exclusive group. No one brings tortured heroes to life quite like Sherrilyn Kenyon. There are similarities between Born of Night and what's become Kenyon's tour de force -- the Dark Hunters. There are more than enough differences to set them apart, though. The League proves her writing has always been in a league all its own.NannetteReviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

A sad and dark story but a sweet romance.
This is a science fiction story that takes place in a dystopian type universe. A coalition of planets are inhabited by all kinds of creatures but only some of them get described. The politics of this world are not clear but the different governments employ a league of assassins who operate within a strange code of conduct. They are allowed to kill the civilians they are contracted to kill but not each other unless it's in self defense and blood was drawn. The league trains its assassins to be killing machins with no feelings. To do it, They take young boys and treat them horrendously.Nyk is a master assassin with a nightmarish past. The atrocious descriptions of abuse he suffered before he was taken to be trained by the league and after were hard to read. He is a hybrid, part human and part another race, and he is despised by both. He trusts no one and doesn't let anyone get close to him. He kills without mercy but has a soft spot for kids.Kiara is a princes and a famous dancer. She is the doughter of a general and has a horrible past too. Her mother and she were kidnapped by assassins when Kiara was a little girl and they made her watch as they tortured and killed her mother, then shot her and left her for dead.Kiara's life is threatened again when a government that wants to put pressure on her father hires assassins to kills her. Her father hires Nyk and his crew to protect her. Nyk is attracted to her but is afraid to let her get close to him and doesn't dare touch her. He was raised thinking he was worthless. He saves her life many times and she tries to get close to him but he pushes her away.A sad but well written and engaging story.

Kiara has seen her mother raped, tortured and killed in front of her eyes and shot three times after mother dies, left for dead at age eight. She and Nemesis tangle because she doesn't like assassins who kill for money. Nemesis has always felt something for her. They are thrown together and Kiara starts to see that there's more than just an animal that kills for money. She starts to feel a kinship with Nemesis. I would have given it 5 stars…
If it hadn’t been a bit predictable. You can tell that this is a formulaic sci-fi alien romance. But, I will say this - it earned every bit of its 4 stars. There was an actual plot line that kept my interest and the romance made sense as it was woven in. I’m very likely to read more in the series!

Don't let the genre scare you!
I had to say I was very hesitant in buying this book. Mainly because I've little experience when it comes to a combination of sci-fi and romance, but also because of the very mixed reviews I've been seeing. As usual I didn't let myself be intimidated by a few bad reviews and a different genre and bought it. I mean hey, I've yet to meet a Kenyon novel i've not enjoyed, so why not?My initial reaction: wow.Not what i expected at all - and in the best of ways. Nykyrian as a character is rather addictive, you just want to know more and like most addictions, the more you know the more you want. Kiara, in comparison is not hardly as exciting, but has her moments and is, by no standard, a bad character - but neither is she the sort of character i enjoy all that much. She is, within the books, referred to at times as princess and there are moments where she gets the superiority and haughtiness of such a role - which of course only makes me want to hurt her. But looking beyond the surface its easy to see thats habitual and defensive behaviour and part of what makes her an interesting character in the long run. The characters have flaws, some more obvious than others, and thats what makes them so interesting in my mind.As for the overall story, it was fast paced, introduced the League universe without blinding you with details and entertained brilliantly. I have always appreciated Kenyons ability to write so clearly without skipping out on detail and its present within this book and its sequels (which I have also recently read and enjoyed).Whether this is your genre or not, I really do suggest reading it. Its enjoyable and well written. The only thing I would warn against is trying to compare these novels to the later dark-hunter novels. They are separate series', written as such and different in genre, setting and theme; and that is perhaps why I see so many poor reviews. I'm not one to compare books to other series without very good reason for the simple reason that doing so is like choosing favourites, one of the options is going to get trod on unintentionally or otherwise.4/5 - Entertaining, fast paced, interesting and unique. Not the best book i've ever read, hence 4/5 instead of the full 5, but certainly one i'm likely to read again.

4.75 stars, very good start
Nykyrian is the younest ever commander of The League, a group of assassins keeping order under their own rule. When ordered to take out a whole family, a child included, Nykyrian leaves, and in doing so lands a bounty on his head, along with a death sentence. After being kidnapped, again, Kiara, daughter to a powerful player in interplanetary politics, finds herself under protection detail of Nykyrian and his merry band of misfits, outcasts, and other assorted deadly assassins.Question is... who will get to Kiara first? and can Nykyrian keep her aline long enough to make her his?In the interests of full disclosure, I should up front, this is totally NOT what I was expecting! I was, for some reason, expecting vampire assassins, bad ass dudes keeping the peace. NOW I know different and I'm not a single bit disappointed! This is the first I've read of Sherrilyn Kenyon's books, and of The League, and it had been sitting on my wish list for some time. I bit the bullet and bought the 5 most expensive books off that list at beginning of August 2014 and this is the second Ive managed to find time to read. This book has a lot going for it, it takes place in the solar system, somewhere, and has a huge assortment of aliens, hence the fantasy/sci-fi shelving. It has heat, BUT not as explicit as some books, it has violence, and that IS graphic, painful to read at times. It has all manner of back stabbing, double crossing, life threatening "people" (and I use the term loosely!) that some I just wanted to scream at and deliver unto them that which they deliver unto others. I mean, come on! (He'll hate me for saying this but poor) Nykyrian never had a childhood, and those people who made it such a hard time?? oh they get their comeuppence at Nykyrian's hand. Kiara, she led a sheltered life til she and her mother were kidnapped, after that, it became a prison of sorts. And while she doesnt understand, at the beginning, HOW Nykyrian and the others live the life they do, she comes to understand WHY.I loved this, but couldnt quite stretch to the full five stars, I think it was the violence. Its quite intense, especially Nykyrian's childhood and move up the ranks of The League. the second book is safely on the wishlist, but now stands at the most expensive book there.

What a "FABULOUS " Read!
Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of the best writers of our age, she has created this series "The League", it is set in the Ichidian Universe. It has many different planets with a diverse array of sentient beings living, working, loving, hating, revenge taking, deal making & breaking and murder is commonplace. If you're weak you won't survive unless you have credits (money) to pay for protection. This series starts with one person's life being ripped away, abuse, physical & sexual assault is common place, sheer brutality for the lols, plots within plots to overthrow royalty for personal gain, not caring who they destroy to get what they want.. However, there are those who would stand in the way to stop the carnage. This is where a band of beings forge friendships tighter than any blood family fight for what they believe in. This author has created this place, where I for one would love to have amazing friends like these! Miss this series and it will be your loss, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! ☺️
