Women in the WWII effort often were out of their homelife and roles for the first time. This is a story about that time and those women. Hawn plays an innocent young wife whose sailor husband has her under his thumb but Kurt Russell, a 4F coworker, coaxes her into an affair. Lahti is a worldly wise "broad" who is also a coworker and Hawn's neighbor, also encouraging her to indulge herself and give up her goody two shoes attitudes. The great 40's big band music adds to the atmosphere. However, Goldie Hawn is a comedienne, not an actress and a better actress could have brought more reality to this role. The real actress is Christine Lahti who's skills add some credibility to the film. The film doesn't seem to know whether it wants to be a light hearted romance or a costume drama. In any case, if you want to be really touched by a similar theme but with a very serious approach, see "Coming Home" with Jane Fonda. An added bonus is to spot is Ed Harris's crotch reveal when he flops down wearing only a towel. Blink and you'll miss it.

Appreciate It More Now
Liked this story and movie more now then when I first saw it.Admittedly, as a young, romantic woman, all I saw, the first time I saw it, was the turmoil of a married woman falling into love with another man and a bittersweet ending. Felt sad for the Kurt character. This time around, I saw the story differently with different eyes. Now, I see the story was much richer. How the war and war effort changed women's lives. Those women who emerged loving and appreciating what was good in themselves and their effort was the central theme. Now, I saw the fate for Kurt, made sense.Notwithstanding, however..more could have been included, to pay respect to the men and women who served. The honors they deserve. I thought the actors who played the service men, did an excellent job.

Great Movie HIstorically True
Great movie. Great actors. Historically true because during WW2 all the men were drafted to fight in the war and the aircraft industry workers who were MEN ONLY were replaced with WOMEN who did such a fabulous job.....worked harder than the males whose jobs they filled. Yeah, after the war all the women were "Kicked back into their kitchens" but they did not go back into their kitchens....They got a taste of FREEDOM and started wearing PANTS and did not give up their new positions as HEADS OF THEIR HOUSEHOLDS. Yes! LOVE THIS MOVIE. Goldie Hawn was terrific in this movie.

WORLD WAR II MOVIE-BUT A 'SIDE STORY'-ONE OF MANY I SUPPOSE!
I've watched so many movies that I get one mixed up with another or insanity is just around the corner. I do, however, read everything I can and see everything I can regarding the Holocaust and World War II. This movie staring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel. They actually fell in love during the making of this movie and have been together 30 years or in Hollywood terms FOREVER! The movie takes place in 1941 and the men who can fight are sent to fight and the women must take over their jobs building airplanes and other things that are needed in the war effort. The only thing I sort of objected to was that when the war was over the women were sent home and the men took their jobs. Would it kill them to have a few women around. These gals were competent and made all kinds of rivets and bullets and airplane parts and whatever else was needed for the war but they were sent home to take care of their men and, of course, many wanted to do just that but a few would have liked to stay on. I would think all that was used in the war needed to be replaced. All in all this was a really good movie; Christine Lahti and Ed Harris also were main characters. All of them were so young that's it's a shame they're now older than me (choke, choke). Two words; FANTASTICOK, I can't spell either!!!By the way--you can rent it for $2.00 on instant video..can't beat that!!

Fairly accurate deptiction of the home front during WWII with great portrails by major stars.
During WWII, people all through their shoulders to the wheel, for the most part. The experience changed society, though. You will see marital attitudes and expectations change along with workplace attitudes and expectations. These were real and the depictions are typical. Strains on ordinary men and women were shown to with good and bad decisions depicted fairly. This is a historical dramatization and a good one.

Heartwarming movie about love, friendship, loyalty and forgiveness.
Goldie Hawn (Kay) and Kurt Russell (Lucky) may be listed as the 'stars' of this movie, but it is definitely an ensemble cast. Christine Lahti (Hazel) gives a break-out performance. Minor characters add some wonderful humorous moments.Kay's husband Jack is sent overseas to fight during World War II. Lucky is a man who is not able to fight due to being designated 4F. While working as a 'Rosie the Riveter', Kay meets Lucky and eventually the sparks flame into a fire they can't ignore. Hazel's beau decides to enlist, so she goes to work as a riveter and becomes close friends with Kay, her neighbor.Hazel's role in Kay's life is pivotal, especially when Jack returns from the war unexpectedly and suspects Kay is having a fling with Lucky. Hazel covers for her and, subsequently, she and Lucky do become romantically involved, which strains Kay and Hazel's friendship almost to the breaking point. Ultimately, however, amidst all the personal post-war adjustments, they realize the bond between them cannot be broken.

A great nostalgic movie about a long lost time never to ...
The theme song by Carly Simon is one of my favourites. A great nostalgic movie about a long lost time never to be repeated. As someone who lived in that era, the sets and costumes are perfect
