Perfect for keeping dogs out
These trash bins are exactly what we needed to keep our dog from eating our recycling. The lids themselves (the whole lid, not just the top part that swings open with the pedal) snap on so they won't come off when knocked over, which was a problem we had with other products (even some really expensive automatic products that are marketed towards pet owners). Having the lids lock and also be secured to the bin were requirements for us and this is the best product we found! I actually prefer not to have technology involved where it isn't needed (the mechanical parts in the automatic ones seem to break easily). My only issue is that they locks are actually really hard to turn. It's good because it keeps the dog out but it hurts my fingers. Not a big enough issue for me to return them, though. I'm definitely keeping these! For reference, we have a 65-lb herding dog, so she's strong, smart, and very high energy. These have kept her out so far!

Sweet spot of price and security
Yes, there are more secure trashcans than these. If you are willing to spend enough you can even get steel bear-resistant ones. Even in plastic you can get stronger ones but you're going to pay significantly more for one of them than for two of these. As I write this I'm placing my 4th order for these cans; they do wear out eventually. I've been getting about 4 years on them before the lock gives out. Once the dogs know they've been compromised its over, but it takes a while. This most recent replacement is due to misuse and not a manufacturing defect. As long as they are locked, the vulnerable point is the snap-on top assembly, which we broke ourselves; not the dog.

Keeps fat cat out
I got this set of two trash cans to replace the standard set we had in the kitchen. I have a very food-oriented cat who is constantly on the prowl for snacks and over the past few months had figured out that he can knock over the trash can and help himself to whatever delicious garbage he finds there. It was a non-stop problem; I’d pick all the trash up and then there Max would be a moment after, dumping it all to the ground again to go after some plastic that briefly touched some ground beef. It was becoming not only a hazard to his health but stains from the trash were ruining our flooring. Finally I had enough and bought these cans and the experience has been great.Max has done his best to outsmart these new cans but his efforts have gone without reward. He knocked over the new can almost immediately and the lid stayed firmly in place. I’ve had it for a few weeks now and his attempts at getting into the trash have finally stopped because he can’t manage to get anything out of the cans. The lid also prevents the odor of the trash from getting into the surrounding area, so it doesn’t stink up your kitchen and your pets ability to smell it is limited.I rated these cans five stars because they do what they say they will do and they do it well. HOWEVER, there are some drawbacks that I will not take points off of for because they depend on the user. Here they are:The whole lid can be difficult to get attached to the can for the first time if you don’t have a bit of strength. Instead of sitting on top of the can, the lid is attached by a hinge in the back. The product does not come in one piece so you have to attach the lid to the body of the can by pushing the hinge into place. This prevents the lid from falling off. I had a hard time getting the lids on and needed help from a second person. Once they’re on, though, all you have to do is pull the lid up from the front under the rim when you are ready to pull the bag out. Careful not to drape the bag over the hinge, though, because it will prevent the lid from opening properly and it will tear up the bag.The locking mechanism on the top of the lid serves its purpose but it is a little difficult to turn due to how small the handle is. If the handle were taller and had a loop to put your fingers through, it would be less difficult, but unfortunately it is as it is. If you have to keep the lid locked at all times to prevent pets and children from getting in and you have to deal with the lock every time you go to toss away a finger bandage or a paper towel, it might be more of a struggle for you. For that reason, I would not recommend this product for seniors or anyone with arthritis or other conditions that affect their hands. For everyone else, this is a great solution if you have a garbage-diving cat.

Problem with trash bag and lid opening mechanism
The lid on my old Sterilite kitchen trashcan broke, so I ordered these. They were delivered today, and while they seem well constructed, there seems to be a problem with the design. I placed my trash bag around the lip of the trashcan and then placed the lid on as instructed. But, when I pushed down on the foot pedal to open the lid, it didn't open. I discovered that the mechanism that opens the lid was placed in the area that is covered up by the trash bag, which doesn't allow for the mechanism to open the lid. I then maneuvered the trash bag to go around the lid opening mechanism, but then my trash bag wouldn't stay in place on the lip. Who designed this? This problem could be totally avoided if this trashcan had a trash bag holder that sits inside at the top of the trashcan and holds it in place without interfering with the lid opening mechanism. I ended up jury-rigging this trashcan to hold the trash bag by fitting the trash bag around my older, smaller trashcan basket and then placing it inside this trashcan. It works perfectly now, but I shouldn't have to jury-rigg this trashcan in the first place.

Works great with 2 dogs who love to open trash cans!
We are loving that this trash can-has a good latch-locks tightly even if the trash is full-has worked to keep animals outWhat we don't love-the bags get caught in the closing mechanism and the garbage can will stay open unless pushed down.We do wedge our trash can between a wall and a table so the dogs cannot pull it out. ( You can barely see it in the picture, to the left of the entrance table)
