Works fine out of the box (Mac)
I have a 3-year-old Mac desktop and I do not require a lot of features from a mouse. This mouse is very comfortable (if you're using it right-handed) and tracks very well without a mouse pad. The two main buttons work out of the box (no software install) as does the scroll wheel for scrolling up, down, right, left, and as a third mouse button. It is nice that this type of mouse does not blind you if you look at the bottom of it. I'm really happy with this mouse. If you are looking for a solid, reliable mouse, this is a good choice. If you don't need fancy features like zoom, the quality of the software doesn't matter because you don't have to install it. I haven't installed the software so I can't review that.

Good ... Good ... Good ... all the way
This is probably one of the only mice that have actually got the thumb button placing right. taken it may be a bit back for big hands like mine. But curving your thumb to click ... that's a no-effort compared to stretching your thumb forward like other mice expect you to. No problems with hibernating and suspending with my machine. All functions stable as a rock and absolutely love the software. It is so easy to reconfigure this mouse according to the task at hand. A true time-saver. My son also uses it for excellent gaming. Also, get the updated software from the logitech site. I have had no problems with this device at all except my hands are a little big and this one is about the same size as the normal Microsoft mouse and not as big as the pictures may make you think. Also, the middle button is a little too hard for my taste ... hey, no problem ... I just use the feather-lite right-tilt as the middle-click ! Awesome !

The comfortable Logitech MX 400
Designed specifically for right handed people - I use the Logitech "MX 400 Performance Laser Mouse" with my desktop Macintosh computer, and love it. The "MX 400" is said to have a more accurate tracking ability than an ordinary "optical" mouse, however, this is not why I recommend it. I find the "MX 400" to be as good as my old Kensington "Elite Optical" mouse for routine tracking, but in spite of the hype about laser tracking being better, I have not found this to be the case. In fact, when I use "Photoshop Elements" to trace the outline of an object in a picture, the "MX 400" is a little trickier to control than my old "Elite Optical". But what makes the "MX 400" a great mouse to use, is its overall shape, and the placement of its two customizable side buttons. The "MX 400" is ergonomic without being weird, and is the most comfortable mouse I have ever used. Its two customizable buttons are both on the left side, and very easy to trigger by just the use of my thumb. Other mice I have used, including the "Elite Optical", had a customizable button on both the left and right side of the mouse, and positioned them in a way that made it awkward to trigger either without first shifting my hand's grip on the mouse. This is not the case with the "MX 400" - this mouse allows me to hold it with a natural and comfortable grip all the time, while still being able to trigger either of its two custom side buttons quickly and easily. I therefore recommend the Logitech "MX 400 Performance Laser Mouse", for its superior design and great comfort in using.

Almost perfect
I just switched from PC to iMac. Wanted a mouse that I could configure and felt better than the supplied Mighty Mouse. Also wanted a corded mouse that I could use in working with images in Photoshop. The MX 400 has more than satisfied me in the week I have been using it. I was able to configure the buttons to do what I wanted and had no trouble at all with the downloaded Logitech software for Mac. As others have noted the wheel click is much stiffer than any other mouse I have used. I intentionally set out to train myself to use it and am getting pretty good. In all other respects the mouse performs flawlessly. It is comfortable, responsive and precise. I love the amount of control I have over programming the buttons. The last thing I figured out--maybe everybody else got this but me--was the side scrolling function of the wheel. I thought this was for moving the cursor or highlighting inside a word processor document or spreadsheet. (Maybe it does, but I have not figured out how.) So far the only way I found the tilt wheel function works is to scroll horizontally within a window that is open narrower than the full width of its contents. Just as the scroll wheel when rotated moves the window contents up or down, tilting the scroll wheel left or right scrolls the window contents left or right. That's helpful sometimes but with a wide aspect monitor that displays windows at full width, I don't see scroll bars at the bottom of windows that often. All in all, the MX 400 exceeds my expectation and is well worth the price. Update 1/11/09 As I hoped, I am getting better functionality even with the stiffness of the scroll wheel click. I expect in another couple of weeks, it will be second nature.

middle click is broken
Every time you try to use the middle click you end up also either hitting the left or the right wheel click at the same time. It is also next to impossible to tell if you really clicked it or not, as there is almost no feedback for the button press.

Dissapointed: Excellent Mouse . . . Until Button Malfunctions - Repair possible
I had this mouse for 3 years. Very happy with it until the left click button starts to malfunction. Now every time I click, it double or triple clicks. Update: I took the mouse apart including the microswitches under the left mouse button. Wiggling the metal parts inside the microswitch (maybe aligning them) and putting all back together fixed the problem (at least for now).

Two major drawbacks
This mouse has a nice ergonomic design and high resolution, but has two significant problems. The first is that the laser tracking system is easily affected by hair. Not a big deal if you don't have pets that shed, but if you do, it will cause problems and you'll need to be vigilant about keeping your desk clean. The second problem is that the tilt scroll wheel is too hard to use as a third button. I don't have the drivers installed, so it's only used as a third button, and it's already hard enough to push it just right to activate it (and sometimes I inadvertently end up right-clicking, too). I don't even want to think about how aggravating it would be to try to use it with the tilt wheel function active. I highly recommend the MX310. Its only real drawback is that it has a symmetric design, so it's not as comfortable as the MX400, but its LED tracking system is rarely affected by hair and its scroll wheel is easy to use as a third mouse button. If I had a choice now I would take the MX310 over the MX400.

Fantastic accuracy
Logitech MX 400 Performance Laser Mouse Logitech MX400 Mouse Last month I replaced a failing Dell mouse with the Logitech MX400 Performance Laser Mouse. I particularly wanted a cord type mouse and after trying several in the store, I settled on this one, then purchased it through Amazon. I was drawn to the black and grey color scheme, more so to the contour shape since it fit comfortably into my arthritic hand. Installation was a snap, programming easy. The increased accuracy of the laser technology over the trackball is brilliant. This mouse does so much more than any previously owned that I'm still in learning mode. For example, with the Logitech MX400 tracking is flawless on virtually any surface and one can scroll side to side and zoom in for closeup shots with the innovative Tilt Wheel Plus Zoom. Forward and backward buttons perform effortlessly for Web browsing and the soft contour sides fit a medium to small hand perfectly. It has a PS/2 port or USB interface so works with any PC or Mac computer. SetPoint software guides you through the added features setup for Windows XP or Vista (downloads available at Logitech for Windows 98, ME and 2000).
