I like it.
I am very happy with this book, it is in an easy format where you read a page and then complete a worksheet. This is just what I was looking for to supplement my home-school curriculum and I can use this for multiple grade levels. My kids are enjoying this format and are retaining information.

Civil War study
This is a good basic tool for teaching about the Civil War. It is meant to be only a component in a civil war curriculum. The students find it easy to use and understand. We are happy with this addition to our studies.

Solid questions, very traditional approach
The workbook is written from a white and traditional position. They work is not boring and the questions are more than just "recite these fact." We use this as an addition for homeschool. We won't complete the entire book, but this is a good supplement to a solid curriculum that includes other perspectives.

Supplement
This book is an interesting supplement for Civil War studies. It isn't a full curriculum but can help kids understand the Civil War better and would be a great Unit Study Supplement.

Good Resource
A great resource for homeschoolers! I am also using the US Constitution book for grade 5. The book is easy to read, understand, and teach from...I'm enjoying reading through it, myself. I plan to use other resources, as well, teaching from many sources allows for more opportunities to grab the attention of many learning styles. It keeps things moving.I recommend this book and the others in the collection--series.

Author Assumes Too Much Foundational Knowledge for Middle Schoolers
This book of 43 lessons is for school teachers and contains reproducible pages to distribute for students to use in the classroom. My biggest complaint about this book which is labeled for use in middle and upper grades is that the background information is minimal. There is one page of paragraph text for the lesson then there is one page for the student to fill in the blank on a graphic organizer format instead of the old traditional questions and answers style. Each reading selection and student activity is supposed to be one lesson so it is convenient to have one day’s lesson prepared and for this to align with state and national standards. However, I do feel that since this is the only base information learning material the students will use it does not provide enough base knowledge and information especially when students never were taught background information or they may have forgotten. In order to get the most learning and critical thinking instead of just being able to fill in the blanks and obtain a correct answer, the student should have more information to learn from. I am not sure if this problem is the challenge of keeping a topic to one page of text only or because the main author is a college professor. Sometimes when authors know a lot of information they may be out of touch with the mindset and knowledge base of a student of a certain age and therefore do not explain things enough to get all of the necessary information across in order to truly allow the student to be able to have critical thinking skills to discuss and u deratans the objective of that lesson. The majority of the middle of the book/ lessons goes through the battles. This is boring. Although perhaps this alliance to standards I hope that the teachers have the time left to get to the section at the end to come to some conclusions about what happened at the end of the war and the impact on our country due to the struggles and distraction of the war. On the one hand as a teacher not having to write all these lessons yourself I would give this a five star rating for convenience but I really think there is not enough background information so I am settling on a 3 star review. My personal feeling about teaching is that the student should be exposed to information that they can understand and to lay a foundation of knowledge and then they should be able to explain it and be impacted by it enough to actually remember this information foe the long term. I personally am not into activities like borinf reading sections the. Doing an activity that just want you to parrot back or spit out correct answers for a grade. I want reading to be engaging and to have actual learning take place and then an abikity to thi k and discuss and taking away information for the long term. If you are curious about what I mean by the reading not being enough to help a student understand here are some examples:On page 2 it does not explain basic information about how Congress is set up so that the student can understand the sentence that says “states had the right to nullify (cancel) unauthorized actions by Congress”. Students in middle school may not even understand what Congress is or how it relates to state government. On page 6 it says the people in the north were “more inclined toward reform movements temperance, women suffrage, and anti-slavery causes “ Students in middle school probably don’t know what suffrage or temperance is.On page 48 there is a discussion of the draft but a basic sentence explaining what the draft is does not exist. These are middle school kids you can’t assume that they understand what the draft is.
