It's a fun book
The pictures are all fun and well composed, the patterns look like they are well written (though I just got it so haven't yet knit anything).

Everything you expect and more
These patterns are amazing! Not all of them are things you would wear to work but enough of them are things that CAN be worn in an everyday setting to make the book great! Every pattern explains where she got the idea for the pattern and why it is for a Geek. I am proud to be a geek and loved that fact that I knew the stories behind the patterns. I think it is cute she used her Roller Derby team as models for the patterns, but a couple of the girls looked a bit frightening and that takes away from the joy on those patterns. I can't wait to start on the Aim to Misbehave Brown coat pattern and the Star Trek Dresses will be a hit at work even with people who have never heard of Star Trek. I love the little bits of Geek data sprinkled through out the book. Sometimes with books like this you get TONS of useless data ON SCI-FI silliness with one or two patterns thrown in as an afterthought. NOT SO with this book! There are little multiple choice questionnaires and some FYI things as the bottom of a few pages that makes the book fun and don't take away from your enjoyment of the book. It is a rare instance that I pick up project books and start planning to make more than half of the patterns. I have my own patterns for the scarves based off the FireFly and Dr. Who series and who hasn't made there own robot or two; however the spin she puts on these geek staples are wonderful! I am would recommend this book to any one who loves the world of the geek, or just knows people who do.

Cute knitting book!
I loved Toni Carr's first book Knockdown Knits: 30 Projects from the Roller Derby Track , so I was super excited to find out about her second book, Knits for Nerds. Most of the patterns in the book are fairly simple. The designs are inspired by the books and shows they reference, so the majority of the patterns are ordinary designs altered (either by color or a small addition) to fit the nerdy theme. The patterns, therefore, are useful for both regular and nerdy use. Two patterns in particular- Creepy Filler Bunny and Robot of the Future- would make adorable kids' toys. Not every pattern in the book appeals to me, but there are several that I absolutely love. I'm giving the book five stars because I plan to make these patterns multiple times. Also, there is nothing at all wrong with the other patterns. I'm just not a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, and I've never seen an episode of Dr. Who.The striped Dr. Horrible Gloves are my absolute favorite. They're long, fingerless gloves which button all the way down the side. I'm also planning to make the Baby Elf Beanie and the Top Hat Fascinator (a tiny top hat!). Future projects include the Light of Earendl Shrug (a gorgeous, long-sleeved lacy shrug), Dragon Rider Gloves (patterned fingertipless gloves), Summer Queen Shawl (a pretty lace shawl), and Aim to Misbehave (a long cardigan with lacy edges). There are also two awesome sock patterns inspired by Tank Girl and Firefly, cute vests, Star Trek outfits, and Star Wars princess hats. The patterns in this book will appeal to a wide variety of knitters, not just the nerdy ones.

Nerd Love
Joan of Dark's first book is amazing... Knockdown Knits: 30 Projects from the Roller Derby Track as a derby girl and a knitter..it is a MUST.this time i find myself unable to choose which design i want to make first!!!i think as knitters sometimes we get anxious to get something made quickly (so that of course we can make something else!).this book has so many fun projects you can whip up in a night or two.. bags, scarfs, gloves, and even toys!there are of course beginner to experienced patterns with clear instructions not to mention a bit of background on the project (what the inspiration was or what character it's inspired by)it has opened my eyes to a few books i'm gonna have to read!!i have decided to get myself some very pricey yarn to make the "firefly" inspired browncoat. i believe i also have a request from a derby wife for a pair of hobbit slippers for her birthday, it's the perfect gift that you will never find in any store and it means so much more when you make it yourself.Thank you Ms Dark for your wonderful patterns and i can't wait to see what you come up with next!-- Sew Knotty #89 Desert Dolls Roller Derby - Phoenix AZ

The Nerd will be satisfied, the knitter will not
I got this over a year ago, because it looked like fun, and I wanted to try some of the projects. This book has two distinct problems with the patterns.Problem one: most of the projects (sweaters I should say) only go up to a size large, leaving those of us who wear plus sizes to work out the math on our own.Problem two, there are no step by step diagrams in this book that show you how things should look, or be shaped at different stages of your project, or if you use a heavier yarn, and yes, this is a problem if you're making any if the garments in this book.I honestly think Toni Carr is a SciFi fan first, and a knitter second. If she does another book like this, I hope she keeps these problems in mind.

Really Great Book
I've made a few projects from this book, and I truly adore it. Most of the patterns are from popular nerd/geek culture, but the book is lacking in the hardcore nerdy inspiration of things such as computer programming, math, science, etc. I do agree with the other reviewer that said Jayne's hat in Firefly was a noteable miss, and the Doctor Who scarf left a bit to be desired. That being said, this is a great book. It is great for a little cosplay, or even a sly way to wave your geek flag to others without being to ostentatious about it. I've recommended it to others, and will continue to do so.

That's Xmas sorted...:)
I misread the descriptions - I thought the descriptions of the Jayne Cobb scarf and socks to go with your Jayne Cobb hat meant that there was a Jayne Cobb hat pattern. Nonetheless, I have earmarked more than several projects to be finished in time for Xmas. Even although the pattern I bought it for isn't in it (my bad) - it's very well worthwhile keeping. Even if you are a beginner - these patterns are mostly really simple. They shouldn't take a knitter long to finish unless you are doing the larger patterns - eg Star Trek Dress.)

Nerdy fun
Great item, great seller, fast delivery!I've only taken up crafts recently but this idea is full of very cute ideas that I'm looking forward to trying. However, some of the peices in this book are a little generic and have been catered to a sci-fi project. I don't particularly mind becuase I'm a newbie but others may wish for more specific ideas. That said there is probably enough in here to keep you knitting away in nerdy contentment :D

Geeks not nerds
Quite frankly I bought this book as I wanted a Princess Leia hat, but there are some other nice ideas. It has also inspired me to have a go at designing some stuff myself. Cuddly tardis and darleks are my next project.
