The only available instruction manual for brick ovens of the traditional New England type.
I recommended this book to a friend who has a house of 1830 with a brick oven, but wasn't sure how to heat and bake in the oven. Very useful.

Turning the clock back!
Rebuilding or starting anew, the job of creating a state of the (18th century) art in cooking and heating centres for your house, large or small, is covered in this small book. The author took me step by step through the development of fireplaces and ovens as they were constructed in colonial and newly independent east coast USA. I now feel I have an understanding of the importance of this most essential part of the house. Also some idea of how to use and maintain one. It was a fascinating trip into the past and a look at an almost ignored part of the 18th century home with a view to design, safety and good cooking. Terrific book, easily read and interesting subject!

Not the best book.
OK description of how to build a brick oven. It's too much of a waste of time.

Not a good option
I bought this book expecting it to be an explanation of how to build a brick oven. Far from it. If you want history and sixty pages of "facts" this is your book, if you actually are researching to build an oven it won't do.

A good reference
Specialized book, recommend it for insiders.

Not a complete step by step guide but has important information.
It was interesting reading about the history of this type of oven. The illustrations are quite good, but I would like to see how the heat is transferred to the different sections of the multi room fireplace and oven. It was easy to understand and follow what the author is saying. It's not a complete guide to building a brick bake oven in step by step guide, but it does give the idea of how to do it. As a novice I would have liked to see how the flue and the rest of the chimney is fitted together.Overall it's a good read with important information and it will give you the idea on how to build or restore a brick bake oven.

the forgotten art
Its an american based book so do hold it against the writer. I was looking for a book about bread ovens, a guide as it were to how to build/renovate and use a bread oven. This more than did it for me. Dont expect highly detailed drawings on how to build a bread oven and or out side ovens there are other books for those , but for what i was looking for this book worked very well, now from this beginiers book i can decide if i want to go any further with the one we have at home and if we get it to work again, pete

Not meant to be "up to date"
This book is interesting more from an historical account of how indoor brick ovens were made in the past. It may be a bit lacking in up to date methods. I guess I should have looked at the publishing date prior to purchasing.
