NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT A GOOD LONG STICK OF TNT!!!!
Agent Roland Banks was NOT enjoying his day. He had just been pulled off a big case in Virginia and sent into the wilds of Massachusetts to a the town of ARKHAM at the request of Mrs. Edith van Dreesen who, apparently, knew someone in the Bureau to get such immediate and specialized attention. But...then...it's not everyday an entire house simply disappears as if sheared off its foundation. Plus, Banks knows that he had been stepping on some powerful toes in pursuing the criminals he had in Virginia so it wasn't too much of a wonder that he was dispatched to the hinterlands. Soon though, his investigations uncover some strange and startling clues as he tries to get a quick resolution to the mystery. But that resolution may not be grounded in the same world that he is and soon strange noises and terrible sightings take him into a horror that he...and the town of Arkham...were not ready for.Graeme Davis writes the latest entry in the Fantasy Flight Games novellas set in the shadows of Arkham (These novellas were written as companion adventures and supporting background information for FFG's Arkham Horror card game. Each book comes with a set of playing cards that can be added to the primary game itself and featuring the main character from each new novella as a player character). Davis twists and turns the story as he weaves clues and misdirection for the reader who always realizes that there will be an eventual supernatural power behind the story. His story telling is solid enough that the reader still wonders through most of the story what truly is behind the occurrence until it stands in all its glory in the final reveal.Another fun chapter in these short trips into the world of the old gods and everything supernatural.

Mostly bought for the cards
The main reason you are probably interested in this is the alternative cards for Roland Banks. You can either use all the replacement cards to replace his default deck-building cards or add all the cards to her deck without replacing any. There's no picking and choosing replacements (If I'm reading the rules correctly). The new weakness seems like it could really screw over Roland with his low sanity but the other card seems like it could be pretty strong too. Overall I think I would probably still use the old cards if I was maximizing Roland but the new ones could be fun to mix it up a bit. There are plenty of weapons to replace his .38 Special so I think it really boils down to the weakness on which set you pick. The book is short, about 100 pages, and gives a decent background on Roland as character. There are a few pages at the end that show illustrations and documents used through out the story which is cool to see after you finish the story. The story follows Roland as he investigates a mysterious event in Arkham. The pacing was pretty good and I felt like I enjoyed the story when I was done with it. There was only so much they could do with the shortness of the story. I felt it ended better than the Hour of the Huntress.Overall it's a nice story for learning more about Roland Banks. Knowing more about the characters in a story driven game is never a bad thing. I've read two of these now and plan on reading them all. So far this was my favorite. Whether it's worth the price will probably hang on the value of the cards to you. I enjoy collecting them so it was worth it for me.

Did Not Come With Cards
I paid full price for this product (≈$45) and it is advertised as including the alternative Roland Banks cards. However, the book came without the cards and this was a gift. I checked eagerly through the pages in hopes they were tucked inside, but there aren't any inside either. I'm incredibly disappointed and returning the product.

Enjoyable Book. Exactly what I wanted out of it
The book was very enjoyable. It wasn't a great book, mind you, but it was enjoyable. It was a good way to fill an afternoon. The story was fun and after playing through a couple of the Arkham Horror campaigns it was fun seeing characters from the cards come to life on the page.

Pretty neat story - as for the availability , just avoid the scalpers
This is pretty neat story that gives great backstory material on one of the Arkham horror investigators - Roland Banks, our favorite detective. The story is short and easy to read, and the art of the hard cover book is amazing. Not to mention the card that comes with the book - pretty good addition to the arkham horror lcg collection. The book is OK for $15 dollars if you're a fan of the Arkham horror products - DO NOT PAY MORE. These novellas get reprinted every 6 months or so and they sell from $12 to $15 dollars depending on the store - if you really want to read the story just buy the kindle version first and wait out a few months to buy the book.

Read only if you're a fan of Arkham Horror LCG
Roland is one of my favourite investigators and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for the colour and insight into the mythos. I can't in good conscience recommend this book outside of the Arkham Horror card game ecology though.
